I’m Ray Han, a Senior Staff Engineer and Head of HyperEdge Networking at ByteDance. I lead the global video delivery infrastructure for Douyin and TikTok, serving two billion people a day on short videos and live streams.
My work is in production internet infrastructure at global scale. Much of it is turning unreliable edge devices into dependable delivery capacity. Out of that work come research collaborations with universities, industry standards now adopted across the field, and the graduate researchers I mentor inside these production systems. I am also an IEEE Senior Member.
Before ByteDance I founded a company that built one of the first production WebRTC networks. Later I turned a research idea into a proof-of-capacity blockchain that has processed more than ten billion transactions. The network I run today is where the two come together.
Lately I have been thinking about what AI will need from the infrastructure I build.
